We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to play a key role in protecting and managing the district’s valuable tree stock. This is an exciting opportunity to join our busy Development Management team, working alongside specialists in heritage, ecology and planning to help safeguard the character of the district, enhance biodiversity and ensure trees continue to provide lasting benefits for residents and wildlife.
About The Role
As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist arboricultural advice on:
- Tree work applications
- Development management applications
- Planning and enforcement matters
- Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)
- Conservation area trees
You will also help maintain and review our database of Tree Preservation Orders, assess new requests for protection, and contribute to balancing sustainable development with the preservation of the district’s most important tree assets.
This is a varied and rewarding role that offers the opportunity to influence the future of the local environment while working on a wide range of planning and tree-related matters.
Training and Career Development
We recognise that great Tree Officers are developed through experience and training. That's why this position offers an excellent career development pathway.
Candidates may join at Trainee Arboriculture Officer level, with full support to develop the technical knowledge, practical experience and professional skills required for the role. Through structured on-the-job learning, mentoring from experienced professionals and opportunities for further training and qualifications, you will be able to build a rewarding long-term career in arboriculture and planning.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
