GRØ Careers is exclusively supporting an established AJ100 practice with a strategic hire into its London studio.
The step between running projects and becoming an Associate.
This is often a fairly undefined stage in an architect’s career.
You’re qualified.
You can coordinate consultants.
You can lead meetings.
You can organise a team and solve problems without somebody checking every decision.
But there is still somebody above you owning the programme, the client relationship and the bigger commercial picture.
And the route from there to Associate can feel increasingly unclear.
We're looking for an Architect / Project Architect who has already built a meaningful level of responsibility, but who still wants to develop the broader skills required to become part of a studio’s future leadership.
What They Need
This isn’t a search for somebody with 15 years’ experience and every answer already worked out.
Equally, it isn’t a role for somebody who has only ever been responsible for their own drawing package.
The right person sits somewhere in between.
You may already be:
- chairing consultant or coordination meetings;
- planning work for junior team members;
- reviewing architectural information;
- speaking directly with clients;
- identifying resource requirements;
- resolving multidisciplinary coordination issues;
- and taking ownership of substantial parts of a project.
Perhaps the areas you haven’t yet fully owned are the overall programme, project resourcing, commercial decisions or long-term client relationship.
That isn’t a problem.
Those are exactly the areas this position is designed to help you develop.
The Environment
The London team is intentionally small (15 staff) and works on substantial developer-led projects with the backing of a much larger national practice (100+ staff).
That combination is important.
You’re close enough to senior leadership to be visible and involved in decisions, but you still have access to the wider delivery capability of a large organisation.

The current workload spans large-scale residential / HRB's, student residential, mixed-use and regeneration, with a particularly strong pipeline of front-end, planning, and design-led work.
Projects will move through different stages, however, people retain meaningful involvement throughout projects, rather than becoming separated into either “design” or “delivery” silo's.
What Makes This Different
The studio already has an established example of somebody joining at a more junior level and progressing through to senior leadership.
That wasn’t achieved simply by waiting long enough for a promotion.
It happened because responsibility was deliberately transferred.
Projects. Teams. Meetings.
And, importantly, client relationships.
The same philosophy sits behind this appointment.
The successful person will work beneath experienced leadership initially, but the expectation is that they progressively become somebody the studio can rely on to own more.
There is a genuine route towards Associate, but it comes through credibility and responsibility rather than title inflation.
Personality Matters
This is a small London team, so how you work with people matters just as much as what sits on your CV.
They want somebody who can communicate well with clients and consultants while also being comfortable working closely with senior leadership.
Someone confident enough to express an opinion, but self-aware enough to know when they need input.
Someone who can support junior colleagues without becoming detached from the work themselves.
And somebody who can establish credibility naturally rather than needing authority to be given to them through a title.
You need to be able to manage up, manage down and work across a project team.
Your Background
Large-scale residential experience would be particularly relevant, including: BTR, PBSA, co-living, mixed-use, major housing, regeneration or masterplanning.

You should have:
- strong professional Revit experience;
- multidisciplinary consultant coordination experience;
- a good understanding of UK planning / Building Regulations;
- evidence of taking responsibility beyond your own package;
- and the ambition to progress towards broader project and client ownership.
You do not need to have personally owned every aspect of programme management, commercial management or resourcing already.
There needs to be enough evidence that you are ready for the next step.

It operates reduced weekly working hours, alongside flexible / hybrid working and regular collaboration within the studio.
Where genuine additional hours are required, overtime can be paid rather than simply being assumed.
