Cowan Architects is an award-winning architectural practice known for innovative design solutions and a high level of personal service delivered by an experienced and enthusiastic team.
Established in 1983, the practice is based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, and undertakes projects across London, the South and Home Counties, as well as selected work throughout the UK and internationally.
Project values typically range from £100k to £10M, covering a broad range of sectors, with particular strength in residential, healthcare and building safety.
Several architects within the practice also act as Expert Witnesses on disability needs in High Court cases, reflecting specialist expertise and commitment to inclusive design.
The team offers a full spectrum of architectural services from project inception to completion, including Employers Agent and Project Management roles, focusing on achieving challenging planning consents and delivering practical, client-focused solutions.
Role Description
The Architectural Assistant will support the design and delivery of projects from concept through to detailed stages, working closely with architects and other team members in an on-site, full-time role based in East Grinstead.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Preparing technical and architectural drawings
- Developing design proposals
- Assisting with planning and building regulation submissions
- Coordinating project information
- Maintaining accurate documentation
- Contributing to presentations and reports for clients and stakeholders
The Architectural Assistant will participate in design reviews, attend site visits as required, and collaborate with external consultants to help ensure projects meet quality, budget, and programme expectations. Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Architecture, with relevant academic qualifications (e.g., Part I or Part II, or equivalent) and understanding of design principles and building regulations.
- Proficiency in Technical Drawing and preparation of detailed Architectural Drawings using Revit (or similar tools).
- Effective Communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with colleagues, consultants, and clients, and to contribute to clear written and visual project documentation.
- Ability to create and deliver Presentations, including visual materials and reports that communicate design intent and project information to diverse audiences.
- Good organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks within project deadlines.
- Interest in residential, healthcare, and inclusive design, with willingness to learn about specialist areas such as disability needs and complex planning requirements.
- Competence with standard IT tools (e.g., Microsoft Office) and familiarity with 3D modeling or visualization software (such as SketchUp, Rhino, or similar) is advantageous.
