Your role and responsibilities
This is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of preserving Suffolk's rich documentary heritage. You will appraise, acquire, catalogue and care for unique archive collections, helping to ensure they are preserved and accessible for future generations. Building trusted relationships with depositors, donors, researchers and community partners, you will play a key role in developing and enhancing our collections. From working alongside volunteers and students to delivering workshops, talks and tours, you will help bring Suffolk's history to life for new audiences. No two days are the same; you may be meeting with a potential donor, cataloguing a fascinating collection in the strongrooms, supporting research enquiries, advising on the handling of sensitive records, or leading an engaging outreach session that inspires people to discover the stories held within Suffolk Archives.
You will need
- a good basis of archival knowledge, either through qualifications or experience in a relevant environment
- an approachable and personable attitude and the ability to initiate and build on key relationships and work well in a team
- a keen interest in promoting the work of Suffolk Archives among traditional audiences, and beyond, and being an advocate for what we do
- skills in prioritising workloads, processing information, problem-solving, and innovative thinking.
We encourage new ideas and fresh perspectives to contribute to the exciting and important work of Suffolk Archives and hope you’ll bring commitment, enthusiasm and innovation to the development and preservation of Suffolk’s heritage.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
