About This Programme
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most prestigious engineering scholarship available to secondary school students in the UK, widely respected by universities and industry alike. Awarded to Year 11 students through a rigorous process including an online application, aptitude exam, and virtual interview, successful scholars are recognised as outstanding future engineers. There are two pathways — a Smallpeice Trust funded virtual scholarship and an externally sponsored scholarship. Externally sponsored scholars receive £250 per year to spend on STEM activities, a dedicated industry mentor, in-person Connect Days, exclusive summer schools, and a welcome networking event. Both pathways give scholars the right to call themselves an Arkwright Engineering Scholar — a title that carries genuine weight on university and apprenticeship applications. State schools get two complimentary applications per year, making it accessible regardless of school budget. Applications open early autumn each year and close mid-December.

Eligibility criteria

Year 11 students in England and Wales (S4 Scotland, Year 12 Northern Ireland) at an affiliated school or youth community organisation. Must have a permanent UK address and demonstrate a strong practical interest in engineering through a project proposal. Must be planning to study at least one of Maths, Physics, Computer Science, Design and Technology, or Engineering Science at A Level. Must be actively considering a university degree or higher apprenticeship in engineering. There is a £45 application fee though state schools receive two complimentary applications per year.
