Job Summary

The Inspectorate of Engineer Resources (IER) team are responsible for delivering physical technical examination services on the Armed Forces; Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment held at MoD establishments throughout the UK and internationally. The role is a full time position, and the successful candidate will be assigned a Permanent Duty Station (PDS) at one of the chosen locations advertised, which will be agreed upon as part of the appointment process.

Engineering plays a crucial role in our business, focusing on the inspection, testing, and assessment of mechanical systems, equipment, and components that require specialised technical inspection standards beyond what regular equipment users typically carry out. This is essential to ensure that the equipment remains fit for its intended purpose, readily available and safe to use. We are continuously looking for ways to improve our processes and techniques with the primary goal of maintaining the Army's combat readiness. The role of a Technical Inspector is essential in sustaining operational efficiency and ensuring a high level of compliance to policies and equipment standards within the Army’s engineering function.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

As a member of a dedicated team, your responsibilities will be performing physical technical inspections on equipment located at Ministry of Defence (MoD) establishments in your region, supported by mentorship from the Chief Technical Examiner.

This role may demand physical endurance, as it entails working outdoors in challenging weather conditions. There may be occasions where you will be required to work independently to carry out inspections, create detailed reports and adhere to deadlines in order to uphold our service standards. In addition, experience of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods, including Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Dye Penetrant Testing and Visual Inspections, would be advantageous. Familiarity with a range of precision measuring instruments and the ability to apply relevant Army policies and procedures are also important. Training will be provided at no cost to further develop these skills.

Additionally, the role may also require occasional overnight stays away from the PDS to conduct inspections at MoD establishments across the UK and internationally. As travel is involved, applicants should ideally possess a Full UK driver’s licence as some locations may not be reachable by public transport. The department covers travel expenses, including accommodation and meals. For overseas travel, which may involve some weekend journeys, Travel Time allowances are provided.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform mandated physical and technical inspections of Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment located at Ministry of Defence (MoD) establishments, supported by mentorship from the Chief Technical Examiner, to ensure compliance with engineering policies, standards and safe systems of work.
  • Prepare and present all technical inspection reports that detail findings, recommendations and assess risks and equipment serviceability to appropriate Senior Management as necessary.
  • Provide units/organisations with clear direction and guidance regarding any aspect of IER certification policy.
  • Make decisions within your own scope of competence & expertise.
  • Ensure that engineering currency is maintained with relevant examination standards and policies applicable to Royal Engineer infrastructure equipment.

Person Specification

Essential Skills:

  • An NVQ Level 3, or equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering subject area.
  • Ability to self-manage own workload effectively.
  • Highly organised with strong planning abilities.
  • Hold a Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods such as; Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Dye Penetrant Testing and Visual Inspections. Certification in Level 2 Non-Destructive Testing methods.
  • Experience in engineering systems is preferred, although training will be provided.
  • Registered or expected to become registered with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).
  • Proficient in I.T. and skilled with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small team.

Licences

  • Hold a Full UK Driving Licence.

Qualifications

  • An NVQ Level 3, or equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering subject area.
