Art Editor – Saga Magazine

Salary: £35,000 To £42,000 Depending On Experience

12-month FTC

Hybrid Home & London

Our vibrant Saga Magazine team are recruiting for a 12-month Maternity Cover. You will be working closely with our newly appointed Creative Director and longstanding Editorial Director.

Although this is just a 12-month opportunity, you will be working with some of the best talent in the industry for the year. In this team your role will be key to ensuring all design meets our high quality of image and design associated with the Saga brand and also adheres to our renowned style.

You will be a creative thinker and can come up with design solutions to present editorial content in an innovative way. You will be knowledgeable in commissioning illustration and work effectively with the team in planning and producing photo shoots. We need you to be passionate about current trends in photography and illustration and constantly be on the lookout for new and interesting concepts.

You will also be able to manage the design of the magazine app and work alongside our inhouse digital team to ensure it is released to a high standard on schedule. You will also oversee picture use for the Saga Magazine website and be a digital native, able to confidently produce assets for our digital channels.

We work in a hybrid way at Saga both at home and in the office. In this team we work mainly from our London office on a Tuesday and Thursday and will on occasion have community meetings in our main office based in Folkestone.

Role Responsibility

You will need to step into this role with ease as an Adobe InDesign expert plus good working knowledge on Photoshop and Illustrator. You will be responsible for:

  • Producing engaging, exciting magazine layouts and associated print design assets
  • Following the Saga Magazine creative style guide, keeping art and design on brand
  • Creating the Saga Magazine app each month
  • Advising and assisting the digital content editors with picture usage
  • Using the workflow system within an online flatplanning system, in order to keep the production process on schedule
  • Working to the agreed deadlines
  • Proven understanding of good typography, layout, colour and grid structures in print magazines
  • Commissioning fantastic contributors, including illustrators, stylists and photographers
  • Overseeing the production of pages from conception to delivery, including managing amends, communicating with the out-of-house repro team and preparing pages for press
  • Providing design support to the marketing team in producing subscription marketing design assets
  • Providing design support to the commercial team in producing advertorial layouts and the associated amends and proofing
  • Providing design support to the digital content editors, advising with picture selection and resizing images
  • Being aware of the needs of our readership, and contribute creative ideas on delivering our product to them effectively

The Ideal Candidate

You will be a great communicator and team player. The magazine department works to tight deadlines, they all pull together and work as a tight team when required. You will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience;

  • Ideally have several years of experience working in a consumer magazine – print and digital
  • Able to confidently art direct photoshoots
  • Has previously commissioned illustration
  • Experience in digital design best practice
  • Proficient in Adobe creative suite
  • An expert in Adobe InDesign
  • Have gained an understanding of photography
  • Understanding of illustration
  • Proficient in basic retouching via Photoshop
  • Understanding of online flatplanning software
  • Attend shoot locations and create behind the scenes content; photo / video
