Data Science & Machine Learning Consultant – Manchester, Gloucestershire, London, Bristol

Permanent (37.5 hours per week) – £39,100 - £77,000 per annum – SC Or DV Clearance

Our client is seeking committed new talent to join their multidisciplinary Data Science and Machine Learning team, with a focus on their clients in the Defence and Security sector. Our client’s goal is to work together with clients to drive innovation and insight from their data, using cutting edge Data Science, Machine Learning and AI techniques.

Working Patterns

This role is predominately based on site, with up to 4 days on site per week.

The Key Responsibilities of a Data Science & Machine Learning Consultant

  • Use data science, machine learning, and AI in innovative ways to tackle challenging problems.
  • Conduct research and create forward-thinking solutions that make a real difference.
  • Lead the adoption and application of emerging methods and technologies.
  • Contribute across the full project lifecycle, from gathering user requirements and building prototypes to scaling solutions and managing live systems.
  • Take ownership of delivering projects to a high standard.
  • Help define new opportunities and play a role in securing future work.
  • Encourage continuous learning and skill development within the team.
  • Build strong expertise in the Defence and Security sector, understanding the environment needed for AI solutions to succeed.

Key Skills Required

The client seeks individuals with a mix of technical expertise and business awareness, able to clearly explain the value and impact of their work.

  • Practical experience in applying data science or machine learning within Defence/Security, the wider public sector, or academia.
  • Knowledge of various machine learning models and architectures (such as Transformers, CNNs, and Generative AI), along with an understanding of when and how to apply them to client challenges.
  • Excellent communication abilities, including creating engaging reports and presentations and simplifying complex topics for different audiences.
  • Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with both colleagues and clients.
  • Demonstrated involvement in advancing professional practice, such as developing new offerings, mentoring team members, and supporting bid or proposal efforts.

Additional Desired Skills

  • Skilled in applying advanced methods to extract insights from text, audio, images, or video.
  • Experienced in using Data Science and Machine Learning tools and services provided by cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, following best practices to produce high-quality, maintainable code.
  • Familiar with widely used Python libraries for data handling, statistical analysis, machine learning, visualisation, and building interactive web applications.
  • Proficient with leading machine learning frameworks, including TensorFlow and PyTorch.
  • Strong grounding in statistics and probability.
  • In-depth knowledge of the machine learning lifecycle, covering everything from prototyping cutting-edge models to scaling and managing solutions in production.
  • Experience with workflow and pipeline management tools such as Kubeflow, MLFlow, Argo, or equivalents.
  • Awareness of ethical and responsible AI principles, with practical experience applying them in real-world projects.
