A.I Engineer – Fractional Contract
We are recruiting on behalf of our client, an innovative AI consultancy, who are looking for an A.I Engineer to join their team on a fractional freelance contract.
This isn't a role for someone who has recently discovered ChatGPT and added "AI" to their CV. Our client is looking for someone who is already AI-first in the way they work - someone who builds with AI at the centre of their development workflow and can help raise the bar for the wider engineering team.
You'll work directly with clients to build real-world AI solutions, while also helping shape how the team approaches AI development.
The role will involve regular travel to London, with the flexibility of a fractional engagement making this an ideal opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants to work on cutting-edge AI projects without committing to a traditional full-time role.
The Role
As an A.I Engineer, you will design and build production-grade AI applications using Large Language Models, with Claude being the preferred platform.
- You'll work across complex business problems, creating intelligent applications that transform how organisations access, analyse and use their data.
- A key part of the role will be designing agentic and multi-agent workflows, intelligent search and knowledge retrieval solutions, and AI-powered automation.
- You'll also work directly with clients, bringing your technical expertise into workshops and delivery environments while helping the wider engineering team adopt an AI-first approach.

Key Responsibilities
- Build production-grade AI applications using Large Language Models, particularly Claude.
- Develop repositories and applications with an AI-first development workflow from the outset.
- Design and implement multi-agent systems and sophisticated agentic workflows.
- Build intelligent search and knowledge retrieval solutions across structured and unstructured data.
- Automate data preparation, analysis and reporting processes using AI.
- Develop AI solutions that improve decision-making, efficiency and business processes.
- Work closely with clients to understand problems and translate them into practical AI solutions.
- Travel to client sites in London for workshops, meetings and delivery.
- Use voice and AI-assisted development tools as part of your everyday workflow.
- Share your knowledge, approaches and AI development techniques with the wider Engineering team.
- Help establish and raise the standard for AI engineering across the organisation.
Skills and Experience Required
- Proven experience building and deploying production-grade AI solutions.
- Strong hands-on experience with Generative AI and Large Language Models.
- Significant practical experience using Claude, ideally Claude Code, in your day-to-day development workflow.
- Experience designing and implementing multi-agent AI systems and agentic workflows.
- Demonstrable experience building AI applications rather than simply experimenting with AI tools.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and an ability to work comfortably across repositories, APIs and modern development environments.
- Comfortable working directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
- A genuinely AI-first mindset and a willingness to experiment, challenge and find better ways of working.
