Artistic Director

Works in Partnership with Development Director, reports to Board of Trustees

Location: Cinderford, Forest of Dean

Salary: £19 per hour, £23,712 per annum (£39,520 Full Time Equivalent)

Hours: 24 per week (3 days) - working pattern by arrangement

Key Responsibilities:

  • To lead the organisation in partnership with the Development Director
  • Oversight of Artspace’s creative programme, particularly ensuring that inclusivity and accessibility are the core of what we do.
  • To contribute to key and relevant local and county strategies in consultation and collaboration with other arts and culture organisations, as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships and networking in the sector in line with Artspace’s Business Plan, Workplan and Strategic Objectives.
  • To produce the Artspace Business Plan alongside the Development Director and in consultation with colleagues and Trustees, and to ensure that Artspace works within its strategic objectives as outlined in the Business Plan
  • To be strategic lead for Artspace on Gloucestershire NHS ICB Creative Health commissions and other creative health projects.
  • Hold overview of Artspace’s Engage Circus Project and inclusive and outreach circus activities.
  • Attend consortia, partnership, networking meetings and other external events where relevant and within role (or delegating attendance to Team Support, Project Co-ordinators or Programme Managers).
  • To contribute to the AGM, and to staff and board meetings, leading where appropriate.
  • Work with the Development Director and Programme Manager to raise funds for Artspace activities and programmes, through grant applications, donations and contracts for paid work and look for opportunities to diversify income.
  • Responsibility for reporting to funders in accordance with relevant contracts managed by this role, and oversight of all key organisational contract reporting.
  • To line manage and support other members of staff.
  • Financial Controls; work with the Finance & HR Officer, Development Director and Programme Manager to set budgets annually and review throughout the year, keep budgets on target and sign off expenditure within areas of responsibility, including managed projects.

Experience, Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • A strong understanding of, and demonstrated professional experience in, the value and importance of arts and creativity in enriching the lives of individuals and communities.
  • A deep commitment to inclusion and accessibility, and to the belief that we are stronger when disabled and non-disabled people create, learn and work together.
  • Highly organised, self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritising and managing competing demands effectively.
  • Experience of strategic business or charity/third sector planning.
  • Experience of managing small to medium-sized teams and the day-to-day operations of an organisation or department, including direct line management and/or supervision.
  • Experience of managing contracts and/or Service Level Agreements, including monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
  • Good working knowledge of budgeting, financial management and financial controls.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining effective partnerships and collaborative working relationships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with practical experience of working with people in a public, community or other inclusive setting.
  • Good working knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 applications.
  • A strong commitment to environmental sustainability and sustainable ways of working.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of charity legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Experience of charity finance and financial reporting.
  • Lived or professional experience of working alongside disabled people and/or within an inclusive organisation or setting.
  • Experience of working in the third sector.
