Asbestos Laboratory Manager
Responsible for analysing and identifying asbestos-containing materials within building materials and producing accurate reports to clients. All analysis and reporting will be carried out to meet the requirements of ISO:17025. The lab manager should be able to work effectively alongside other bulks analysts, surveyors and clients.
It is the responsibility of the lab manager to co-ordinate the daily running of the lab and if necessary delegate tasks to other bulks analysts. The lab manager reports to the Director and will work along side the quality manager, office staff and other bulk analysts.
Qualifications / Skills
- BOHS P401 qualification in Asbestos Identification or equivalent
- Proven record of good score in AIMS
- Proficient in the use of a microscope for asbestos fiber identification
- Good knowledge of HSE asbestos guidance, regulations, and standards
- Computer literate with Office 365, Microsoft Word and Excel experience
- Attention to detail, communication skills (both written and verbally) with the ability to manage and organise their own workload effectively
- Follow health and safety guidance within laboratory
- Retake periodic refresher training
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to delegate tasks to team members fairly
- Calm, approachable empathetic manor coupled with strong integrity
- Proactive decision making when dealing with problems – solution based approach
- Adaptability and flexibility

Role will require a good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, proficient in Word, Outlook and Excel.
Ensure that tasks are conducted strictly in accordance with the Company’s Procedures and the current version of all relevant Legislation and Guidelines including the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
Along with analysing samples in line with SOPs and current version of HSG 248, the Asbestos Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day to day running of the lab and the organisation of any other asbestos bulk analysts.
Additional duties include:
- Responsible for maintaining and recording stock levels of lab consumables RI liquids/ Slides and slips etc.
- Ordering consumables from approved supplier list
- Alongside archiving of samples. Arranging collection of waste in a safe manner in accordance with SEPA and special waste regulations.
- Training new lab staff and updating training records
- Keeping on top of quality related issues, co-ordinating AIMS subscription, filling out NCW for lab based issues
- Engaging with external maintenance suppliers and arranging servicing / calibration
- Maintaining and adhering to standards to ISO 17025
- Liaising with quality manager to maintain efficient quality systems
- Making sure daily rechecks / QA are being carried out
- Helping out with admin tasks for booking in samples / reviewing certs / sending certificates / filing
- Dealing with client queries and complaints
- Taking phone calls and directing information to relevant staff

Pay: £14.00-£15.50 per hour
