Job Description
Assessment Assistant (SC5)
Crisis Support and Resilience Team - part of the Financial Assessment Service
We are delighted to invite applications for an Assessment Assistant (SC5) to join our newly established Crisis Support and Resilience Team – a high-profile, fast-developing service at the heart of the Council’s work to support residents through financial hardship and build long-term resilience.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build skills, gain experience in financial assessments, and develop a clear pathway into more complex decision-making roles.
About The Role
As an Assessment Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of our crisis and hardship schemes, including the Crisis and Resilience Fund, Housing Payments and Council Tax Support Hardship Payments. You will provide high-quality administrative and assessment support, working closely with Crisis Support and Resilience Officers to ensure applications are progressed accurately, efficiently, and compassionately.
Your work will directly support residents at difficult points in their lives, helping ensure timely access to financial help and wider support.
The post offers a clear development pathway, with scope over time to take on more complex work and progress to a higher-graded role.

- Can work well in a busy, supportive team environment
- Are motivated by making a positive difference to residents’ lives

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
