Job Purpose
National Grid Electricity Transmission is entering an unprecedented period of investment and network growth to support the energy transition. To ensure we make the right investment decisions at the right time, we're establishing a new Asset Group Strategy team within Asset Management.
As Asset Group Strategy Manager, you'll lead this newly formed function and take ownership of the long-term asset investment strategies that underpin our network investment plans. Working across Asset Management, Engineering and Operations, you'll ensure decisions are driven by evidence, risk and value, creating a clear and consistent approach to asset intervention and investment planning.
This is a high-profile leadership role with responsibility for shaping investment priorities, supporting regulatory submissions and building confidence in how we justify funding that maintains the reliability, resilience and performance of Great Britain's electricity transmission network.
What you'll do
- Lead the development of long-term asset group strategies that drive investment decisions across National Grid's transmission asset portfolio.
- Build and lead a multidisciplinary team of asset managers and analysts, creating a high-performing culture focused on delivering strategic outcomes.
- Develop and maintain risk and value-based investment portfolios, balancing asset performance, network risk and customer value.
- Use asset data, lifecycle insights and analytical tools to identify priorities and optimise investment across multiple asset groups.
- Deploy robust approaches to whole-life cost modelling, cost-benefit analysis and investment appraisal, ensuring decisions are evidence-based and consistent.
- Own the long-term view of asset intervention priorities, ensuring emerging risks, new information and changing network needs are reflected in investment plans.
- Lead the preparation of investment business cases and regulatory submissions, clearly justifying need, value for money and strategic benefit.
- Proactively build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across Asset Management, Engineering, Operations and external regulatory bodies.
- Provide assurance, confidence and transparency across investment decision-making processes and supporting evidence.
- Help shape a new strategic capability that will transform how asset investment decisions are developed, prioritised and justified across the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
