The role
We're an accountancy practice based in London with a small branch in Sheffield, looking for an Assistant Accountant to take on a portfolio of 30+ clients as their main point of contact.
This is a relationship role as much as a technical one. You'll be the person clients ring when they have a question, the person chasing records when a deadline is close, and the person who notices when something in the numbers doesn't look right. You'll own your clients rather than passing work up a chain.
Day to day that means preparing VAT returns and putting them up for review and approval, running and submitting payroll for your clients, and keeping CIS returns filed on time.
One of those clients is a construction business in Liverpool. They're our largest and they want someone with them in person. At the moment that's Tuesday and Wednesday, but we're reducing it to one day on site and one day working remotely for them. Travel is reimbursed in full. The rest of your week is flexible between our Sheffield office and working from home.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
What we need from you
- Serious CIS experience. This is the one we won't budge on. With a construction client of that size you'll be dealing with subcontractor verifications, monthly returns and deductions constantly. We need someone who has genuinely lived with CIS, not someone who has seen it in passing.
- Xero. Comfortable in it day to day, without handholding.
- Good time management. Thirty odd clients, all with their own deadlines and their own habits about when they send things in. You'll need to stay on top of that.
- Happy to travel. One day a week in Liverpool, expenses covered. The rest is up to you and how you work best.

Helpful, but not essential
- Payroll experience, ideally BrightPay
- AAT qualified or part qualified. We'd take a strong practical background over a qualification any day.
Why here
The Sheffield team is small, which cuts both ways honestly. You'll be hands on and you won't be hiding behind anyone. But it also means there's real room to grow into something bigger as the practice does. Whoever takes this on will be one of the people that growth gets built around.
- Competitive salary plus bonuses
- Travel to Liverpool reimbursed
- 20 days holiday plus bank holidays
- Pension, 3% employer contribution
- Flexible working between the Sheffield office and home
- Study support: we cover the cost of your study materials and exam fees
