Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our finance team. As Assistant Accountant, you will be responsible for the preparation of financial reports as well as maintaining and updating the general ledger.

Specific Duties

  • To undertake all regular and month-end accounting processes to produce draft management accounts, including prepayments, accruals, and monthly payroll posting.
  • Support payroll processes as required.
  • To produce draft management accounts for review, efficiently and accurately within deadlines, with supporting information and/or explanatory notes or schedules.
  • Investigate and report on areas of concern relating to variances in expected sources of income or expenditure.
  • Manage the college contracts, ensuring correct funding is received.
  • Support Senior Manager (Finance) with the year-end statutory accounts and audit process.
  • Reconcile and allocate payments received via Just Giving.
  • Reconcile control accounts monthly.
  • Prepare defrayal documents for project funding.

General Duties

  • Maintain accurate records/reports and ensure required paperwork is completed on time.
  • Take responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of young people with specific safeguarding duties.
  • Contribute to a process of continuous improvement and regular review of systems and controls to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations.
  • To be flexible and undertake work which supports the needs of the organization.

Person Specification

The following are the criteria that will be used for shortlisting:

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Excellent working knowledge of SAGE Line 50 and understanding of the payroll process.
  • Progress towards completion of an accounting qualification.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Ability to understand complex formulas. Must be demonstrated during the recruitment process.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive data.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team with shared and overlapping objectives.
  • A mature, proactive, and diplomatic approach, with the ability to work unsupervised.
  • Confident communicator with an ability to liaise and work with people at all levels.
  • Current clean Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work flexibly and take on training when required.
  • Experience of working in the charitable and/or voluntary sector.
