Assistant Accountant

About the Role
We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Assistant Accountant to join our team and support a growing business function within a dynamic infrastructure environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop their accounting career, gain exposure to a wide range of financial activities, and build a long-term career within a leading organisation.
Working closely with the finance team, you will support the delivery of key accounting processes, including forecasting, reconciliations, and month-end reporting. The role offers excellent training and development opportunities, including support for professional studies, making it an ideal opportunity for someone looking to progress their accounting qualifications and career.
Role Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Support month-end and year-end accounting activities.
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with cash flow forecasting and financial planning activities.
- Process and analyse financial information to support business decision-making.
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Maintain accurate financial records and accounting documentation.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies within financial records and reports.
- Assist with internal and external audit requirements.
- Work collaboratively with finance colleagues and operational teams to provide financial support and guidance.
- Ensure compliance with company financial controls, policies, and procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within finance processes and reporting.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
- Experience in an accounting, finance, or accounts-related role.
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.
- Interest in pursuing or actively studying a professional accounting qualification such as CIMA, ACCA, or equivalent.
- Understanding of basic accounting principles and financial processes.
- Experience supporting financial reporting, reconciliations, or forecasting activities is advantageous.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills with excellent diligence.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a wider team environment.
- Experience working within a large corporate or complex business environment is advantageous.

About The Rail Business Unit
