Role Description
This is a full-time Assistant Accountant role based in Sheffield, offered on a hybrid basis with some flexibility to work from home. The Assistant Accountant will support the preparation of financial records, including bookkeeping, reconciliations, and maintenance of ledgers. Day-to-day tasks include assisting with management and statutory accounts, processing invoices, handling accounts payable and receivable, and supporting payroll and VAT returns. The role involves working with senior accountants to ensure timely and compliant financial reporting, responding to client queries, and maintaining accurate documentation. The successful candidate will be expected to follow established processes, meet deadlines, and contribute to continuous improvements in accounting workflows.

Qualifications

- Solid understanding of basic accounting principles and practices, including double-entry bookkeeping and ledger management.
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage) and strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office tools.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and reconciliations.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly to clients and colleagues.
- Good organizational and time-management abilities, capable of handling multiple tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small team, with a professional and client-focused approach.
- Relevant education or training in accounting, finance, or a related field (e.g., AAT qualification or progress toward a professional certification) is highly beneficial.
- Previous experience in an accounting practice or SME environment, and familiarity with UK tax and compliance requirements, is an advantage.
