Assistant Accountant
Location: Reading
Salary: £30,000 - £35,000
Package: 25 days holiday + AAT/CIMA/ACCA study support + pension, private medical and discretionary bonus
Hybrid: 3 days in the office, 2 days working from home
Reporting to: Finance Manager
The Role
We're looking for an Assistant Accountant to join our small, friendly and highly efficient finance team for our UK based client in Reading. Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, you'll play an important role across the day-to-day finance functions, with responsibility for monthly billing, accounts receivable, reconciliations and supporting the month-end accounts process. This is a great opportunity for someone who is part-qualified or studying towards ACCA/CIMA/AAT, and who is keen to broaden their experience and take on more responsibility over time - as well as assist with an imminent systems implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of key finance processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency and deadlines are consistently met.
- Oversee the Sales Ledger duties, monitoring overdue balances and supporting effective credit control and debt recovery.
- Complete the daily bank, credit card and expense reconciliations, investigating and resolving any discrepancies.
- Support the month-end and year-end close, ensuring financial information is accurate and delivered within deadlines.
- Manage the monthly billing process, ensuring invoices are accurate, complete and issued on time.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigating variances and resolving outstanding items.
- Manage intercompany accounting, including invoicing, reconciliations and recharges.
- Provide support to the Accounts Payable function, helping to resolve queries and maintain accurate financial records.
- Assist with the annual audit, preparing supporting information and responding to auditor queries.
- Support the preparation of regulatory and statistical reporting as required.
- Work closely with the Group Accountant on ad-hoc analysis, statutory accounts and wider finance projects.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, controls and efficiencies across the finance function.

About you, as the Assistant Accountant
- Actively studying towards a professional qualification - AAT/ACCA/CIMA
- Experienced within a finance or accounting environment within the UK.
- Confident using Excel and finance/accounting systems.
- Highly numerate with excellent attention to detail.
- Organised, self-motivated and able to prioritise effectively.
- Comfortable working to tight deadlines and managing competing priorities.
- Proactive, hands-on and someone who enjoys getting things done.
- Confident, resilient and able to build strong working relationships.
- Flexible and open to change, with a genuine desire to learn and develop.
- Living in easy reach of their Reading Offices

Desired Skills and Experience
You ideally will be AAT studying, AAT Qualified, or ACCA/CIMA studying, and be able to demonstrate with your practical finance experience a varied finance background.
