Assistant / Intermediate Buyer – Civil Engineering & Groundworks
Location: Milton Keynes
Salary: £35,000 – £50,000 + Package
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
The Opportunity
We are working with a well-established and growing civil engineering and groundworks contractor looking to appoint an Assistant Buyer or Intermediate Buyer to join their commercial team in Milton Keynes.
With a strong pipeline of residential infrastructure and groundworks projects, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your career within construction procurement and join a business offering genuine long-term progression.
We are open to candidates already working within a contractor environment, as well as those coming from a builders' merchant or construction materials supplier who have strong product knowledge and want to make the move into contracting.
The Role
You will support the procurement of materials and services across a range of civil engineering and groundworks projects, working closely with site, commercial, and operational teams.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Procuring materials including drainage, concrete, aggregates, reinforcement, utilities, and general site consumables
- Sourcing suppliers and negotiating competitive pricing
- Obtaining and comparing quotations based on cost, quality, and programme requirements
- Raising and managing purchase orders
- Coordinating material deliveries across multiple live projects
- Working closely with Site Managers, Quantity Surveyors, and commercial teams to understand project requirements
- Monitoring material availability, pricing, and lead times
- Developing strong relationships with new and existing suppliers
- Identifying opportunities for cost savings, value engineering, and procurement efficiencies
- Resolving supplier, material, and delivery issues
- Maintaining accurate procurement and purchasing records

About You
You could currently be working as an:
- Assistant Buyer
- Junior Buyer
- Buyer
- Builders' Merchant Buyer
- Construction Materials Sales Professional
Previous experience within construction, civil engineering, or groundworks would be beneficial, although candidates from the construction materials supply sector will also be considered.

Knowledge of groundworks products such as drainage, concrete, aggregates, reinforcement, and associated civil engineering materials would be particularly advantageous.
You should also have strong communication and negotiation skills, good commercial awareness, and the ability to manage multiple procurement requirements simultaneously.
