Assistant Caretaker Opportunity

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking a reliable, hardworking, and proactive individual to join our caring school community as an Assistant Caretaker. This role is vital for ensuring our school site is safe, secure, clean, and well-maintained for pupils, staff, and visitors.

About the Role

The post includes responsibility for site security, basic maintenance, cleaning, health and safety support, and general upkeep of the school buildings and grounds. A particular requirement and focus of the role will be gardening, including mowing of the school field and all grass areas, pruning, and weeding.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the school site is safe, secure, clean, and well-maintained.
  • Responsibility for site security, basic maintenance, cleaning, health and safety support, and general upkeep.
  • Gardening tasks: mowing of the school field and all grass areas, pruning, and weeding.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility in working patterns, including evenings and weekends when required.

  • The school is looking for someone willing to undertake training including COSHH, IOSH, Manual Lifting, Asbestos, and Fire Safety.

We Are Looking for Someone Who:

  • Has experience of practical site duties including working with machinery and chemicals, and experience of DIY and minor repairs and gardening.
  • Has good knowledge of health, safety, and cleaning practices including cleaning materials linked to COSHH, fire safety, and DIY rules and regulations.
  • Is dependable, flexible, and hardworking with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Can manage a range of site responsibilities effectively including security of the premises, minor repairs, liaising with contractors, cleaning and monitoring, replenishing supplies, maintaining a litter-free environment, and supporting the efficient day-to-day operation of the school site.
  • Can use machinery and IT and is prepared to undertake relevant training where needed.
