About the Role

Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine is looking to appoint an Assistant Chief Constable and is seeking a progressive, innovative leader with the passion and capability to bring new ideas to Northumbria Police.

As Assistant Chief Constable you will play a pivotal role in helping Northumbria Police grow and build on public and organisational confidence whilst developing and nurturing future talent to support change and transformation to deliver an effective policing service.

Who Are You?

You will have a demonstrable track record of successfully working at an executive level, ensuring effective and supportive leadership for officers, staff and volunteers.

You’ll already be operating as a highly effective leader, equipped with the strategic and political acumen to contribute to our future development.

  • You’re experienced in leading business change with a sophisticated level of critical thinking, consistently looking beyond the obvious and exploring alternatives.
  • You’ll be able to demonstrate your ability to quickly establish credibility with staff, partners, and our communities.
  • You have the skills and behaviours to foster a culture where our workforce feels valued, listened to and empowered.
  • You will be adept in handling the media, with the necessary depth and breadth of operational experience.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this role, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Substantive Assistant Chief Constable
  • Chief Superintendent/Superintendent who has passed PNAC and Senior Command Course
  • Chief Superintendent/Superintendent who is confirmed to attend ELP in 2026 or 2027. Any appointment before successful completion of ELP will be temporary and confirmed as substantive only once the programme has been successfully completed.

Successful candidates will be invited to participate in the following selection process:

  • Stakeholder Panel – Comprising external stakeholders. Candidates should note that this panel will not be scored; feedback will be provided to the appointment panel as we value the perspectives of our partners and communities. There will also be an opportunity for internal engagement with members of our force.
  • Presentation and Interview – This will comprise an assessed presentation and interview with the appointment panel.
