Role: Assistant Commercial Manager

Location: London, Milton Keynes or Birmingham (Hybrid)

Grade: G14

Base Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 per annum (Birmingham) £50,000 - £55,000 per annum (London)

Job Description:

Base salary £45,000pa to c.£55,000pa depending on skills, experience and location. In addition, we offer flexible benefits fund of 15% which is paid on top base salary and is fully pensionable, as well as a range of competitive benefits - check them out in the Benefits section on our website.

As an Assistant Commercial Manager at HS2 you will have a key role in supporting the delivery of support the delivery of HS2’s strategic goals by building value-adding supply chains with sustainable commercial relationships.

About the role:

This role supports the commercial management of delivery projects, working closely with contractors and the supply chain to ensure effective commercial control, value for money, and successful project delivery. The position provides commercial assurance and independent oversight to support the Head of Commercial.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the commercial management of HS2 contracts throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring effective commercial control, value for money, and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Assist in the procurement and award of contracts in a fair, transparent, and compliant manner, ensuring all contractual requirements are delivered on time.
  • Build and maintain strong, value-adding relationships with contractors, suppliers, and the wider supply chain to support successful project delivery.
  • Support the development of commercial documentation, works information, contract management plans, and contract documents.
  • Provide commercial advice and support across contracts, helping to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, governance requirements, and project objectives.
  • Assist with the administration and management of NEC3 contracts, including monitoring obligations, maintaining commercial records, and supporting contractual processes.
  • Support the assessment of variations, compensation events, contract payments, and cost estimates to ensure effective financial management.
  • Review and analyse supplier performance, monthly reports, and contract performance data, contributing to management reporting and commercial decision-making.
  • Assist in negotiating commercial agreements, coordinating interfaces across suppliers and contracts, and supporting the resolution of commercial and supply chain disputes.
  • Ensure the organisation has the goods, services, and commercial arrangements required to support each stage of the delivery lifecycle.
  • Promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles in all activities while complying with organisational policies, procedures, and initiatives.

About You:

Skills

  • Ability to administer contracts to deliver infrastructure or similar capital projects and programmes. 
  • Ability to develop commercial policies, processes and procedures. 

Experience

  • Previous experience administering contracts to deliver infrastructure or similar projects and programmes.  
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of dispute resolution processes and procedures. 
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of common commercial policies, processes and procedures.
  • A knowledge of contract, commercial and risk management methods
  • Experience of using commercial management and reporting systems.
