Role Context:
The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections, and engendering trust.
We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, and education. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.
This role sits within the Cultural Engagement (CE) Strategic Business Unit (SBU). CE brings together our portfolio of work in arts, education, English, and research. Our portfolio is delivered through a set of globally led programmes that locate our work and impact within our strategic framework. These programmes deliver our key performance indicators and impact ambitions.
This role sits separately as a client-funded role as part of the wider offer to schools through our Schools Connect programme within Education. Schools Connect aims to support the UK Education Departments to learn from each other and from overseas systems (especially those recognised as high performing). We support policy dialogue and knowledge exchange and run programmes such as the Singapore Building Education Bridges. We also support overseas delegations to engage with UK stakeholders and visit UK schools.
We aim to support the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages in the UK. Within the International opportunities for school workstream, our work brings an international perspective to the UK school experience: We aim to use our international experience and networks to support teachers and schools with advice and guidance on how to find a partner and how to engage learners working with their international peers.
In this role, the Assistant Consultant will work on the exciting global education programme Learning Sectors, supported by Formula 1. Within this programme, which is now in a second phase spanning 7 countries including UK, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, young people build 21st-century skills, oracy & communication skills, international collaboration and intercultural awareness, and gain practical skills for future STEM careers. A key programme objective is the inclusion of girls and children from disadvantaged backgrounds between the ages of 7 and 16 years old. The Assistant Consultant will play a crucial role within the team in recruiting schools for partnership projects, selecting and matching schools, facilitating and delivering webinars for teachers, and supporting schools on their international school partnership journeys including supporting with the wider work of the global Learning Sectors programme. An exciting role with opportunities for skills development in project delivery and project management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
