The Opportunity

As Assistant Credit Manager – Special Asset Management, you will play a key role within a values-led organisation. You will manage high-risk passive relationships to achieve recovery for customers where possible and minimise credit losses for the bank. You will also manage credit facilities with the Business Banking team, ensuring that we provide credit to suitable customers at fair levels of risk and reward. In addition, you will deputise for the Credit Relationship Manager as required and assist with analysing data for the wider Credit Team.

This role offers the benefits of flexible hybrid working, with an expectation to be in our Bristol office 1-2 days a week and the option to work from home on the other days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Relationship Manager for a portfolio of customers, including those subject to insolvency proceedings or recovery plans, maintaining contact with customers and their advisers by phone, letter, and face-to-face meetings.
  • Develop and implement recovery, restructuring and/or work-out strategies, secure borrower agreement, and apply appropriate forbearance concessions for Vulnerable Customers and debt restructuring.
  • Ensure Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles and fair customer outcomes are central to SAM strategy-setting and ongoing portfolio management.
  • Monitor the SAM portfolio, keep Senior Management informed of adverse developments, and manage reputational risk during recovery action in collaboration with Market Communications.
  • Support Business Banking Relationship Managers in pre-default cases to avoid default where possible or bring the situation swiftly under control, and conduct credit reviews of existing borrowing.
  • Report on the performance of the B&D loan portfolio, identifying adverse movements and excesses, and manage the receipt, analysis, and recording of financial and operational data from borrowers in the Bank’s operating system.
  • Deputise for the Credit Manager and assist with their portfolio as required, while supporting the Credit Analysis function to ensure SLAs are met.
  • Support the Head of Credit Risk and Senior Credit Relationship Manager with analysis of the SAM book and wider credit position, while complying with regulatory obligations and internal governance, delivering good customer outcomes, and undertaking any other work required from time to time.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
