Help Shape the Next Chapter of Local Government's National Voice
There has rarely been a more important, or more exciting, time to help shape the future of local government.
As the national voice for councils, the Local Government Association is at the heart of the debate: championing local government, influencing decisions and supporting local leaders to deliver for their communities.
Local government is the backbone of strong, successful and thriving communities. Every day, councils deliver vital services, support people through the most difficult moments in their lives, drive inclusive growth and create places people are proud to call home. At the LGA, you can champion that work on a national stage, strengthen the voice of the sector and help secure the powers, resources and support councils need to succeed.
We're now seeking an exceptional Assistant Director of Communications and External Affairs to join us in a brand-new role at a defining moment for both the organisation and the sector. Joining our senior team offers the chance to shape the next chapter of an organisation with national influence. Reporting to the Director of Communications and External Affairs, you will be a key member of the directorate's leadership team, helping to strengthen how the LGA communicates, engages and influences on behalf of local government.
As local government changes at pace, we are reshaping how we work so that we can provide our members, and the communities they serve, with the strongest possible support. Communications and external affairs will be central to that transformation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
