The salary scale for a Band 3 has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026 backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.

Job Overview

The post sits within the Division of Surgery and will initially be allocated to the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate. The post holder will later be allocated on a needs-based basis to support other directorates within the Division, according to operational priorities and service requirements.
The Assistant Directorate Manager is a key operational leadership role within the Directorate, supporting the Directorate Manager to deliver safe, effective and high-quality services. The post holder will provide day-to-day operational management across a range of services, including outpatient, inpatient, theatre, administrative, workforce and patient pathway functions, ensuring performance standards, access targets and service objectives are achieved.
Working with clinical, nursing, administrative and corporate teams, the post holder will help coordinate service delivery, performance improvement and recovery programmes, while supporting the management of demand and capacity, waiting lists, workforce pressures, financial performance and operational risks. They will analyse performance information, contribute to business cases and service development proposals, and support the implementation of transformation improvement initiatives that enhance patient care and organisational performance.
The role requires a proactive, organised and collaborative leader who can manage competing priorities, resolve operational challenges and contribute to the achievement of Directorate objectives.
Main duties of the job
The Assistant Directorate Manager supports the operational management and performance of Directorate services, working with clinical and operational teams to deliver high-quality patient care. The role supports workforce management, performance improvement, patient access, service recovery, financial management and transformation programmes, whilst contributing to business planning, governance and the achievement of Directorate and Health Board objectives.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Education
Essential criteria
- Educated to Masters degree level or equivalent experience in a senior administration role
- Good knowledge of NHS. Working knowledge of patient pathways in an acute setting.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Welsh Assembly Performance Strategy.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience of managing an NHS service department
- In-depth experience of effective performance management
- In depth knowledge and experience of data analysis and management
- Relevant general management experience.
- Experience of producing management reports.
- Experience of presenting information – written and verbal.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience in medical staffing
- Experience of producing business cases.
- Experience of analysing financial data.
