About the Teams
The Secure Growth team works to enable resilient and secure growth in an increasingly turbulent and ever-changing global economy, learning the economic lessons from recent decades. The team focuses on strengthening the UK’s economic resilience and protecting against economic-based threats to national security while also maintaining openness to trade and investment. We work very closely with colleagues across International Group, the broader Treasury, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Department for Business Industry, Science and Technology and Cabinet Office. The team’s priorities include:
- Developing stronger international partnerships that yield UK growth, resilience and security benefits.
- Leading the planning and delivery of the CX’s annual Economic and Financial Dialogue with his counterparts in China.
- Improving the UK's assessment, monitoring, contingency planning and capability to respond to emerging threats and geopolitical risks.
We are an inclusive, warm and welcoming team looking for an eager, inquisitive and diverse set of individuals interested in working at the forefront of economic security policy.
Global Economics is a team of analysts that works at the heart of International Group to provide analysis and economic policy advice on key global issues, prospects, and risks, and on their implications for the UK economy and policy priorities. The team comprises two branches. The Global Prospects and Advanced Economies (GPAE) branch, which leads on: HMT’s assessment of the global economy; and analysis on major advanced economies, including Europe, the US, Japan, Canada and Australia, including comparisons to the UK. The Emerging Markets (EM) branch, which has responsibility for economic analysis on emerging markets, including China, Russia, Turkey, the MENA Region, SE Asia and Latin America, and leads on a range of cross-cutting EM-focused global economic issues.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Global Economics role:

- IMF programs and OECD economic surveys – Lead on producing recommendations to inform the UK’s position at the IMF Board on key country programmes (including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ukraine), working closely with FCDO and IMF UKDel. Lead on HMG comments on regular IMF and OECD country reporting to inform UK interventions at IMF and OECD board meetings.
- International energy markets – Support monitoring of international oil and gas markets and informing ministers and senior officials of significant events with economic implications. Conduct analysis to support policy teams on the economic impact of decisions impacting these markets (e.g. sanctions policy).
