The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Assistant Management Accountant to join a fast-paced and growing SME retail business.

This is a genuinely hands-on role within a lean Finance team, offering excellent exposure across the full month-end process and the wider business. It would suit someone who enjoys getting into the detail, takes ownership of their work and wants to be part of a team where everyone plays an important role.

You'll work closely with the Commercial Finance Manager and operational stakeholders, helping to ensure the numbers are accurate, processes are robust and month-end runs smoothly.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Taking ownership of key areas of the month-end process from start to finish
  • Preparing and posting journals, accruals and prepayments
  • Completing balance sheet reconciliations and investigating outstanding items
  • Taking responsibility for regular bank reconciliations, ensuring discrepancies are identified and resolved
  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts
  • Investigating variances and financial queries, getting to the root cause and following through to resolution
  • Supporting cashbook and control account activities
  • Ensuring financial information is accurate, complete and delivered within agreed deadlines
  • Working closely with colleagues across Finance and the wider business to resolve queries
  • Helping to improve processes, controls and ways of working as the business continues to grow
  • Providing support across the wider Finance function and getting involved wherever needed

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is hands-on, commercially aware and naturally detail-focused Assistant Management Accountant, with the confidence to take ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience in an Assistant Management Accountant, Assistant Accountant or similar role
  • Strong month-end experience, including journals, accruals, prepayments and reconciliations
  • Excellent bank reconciliation experience and the ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies
  • Ideally, experience within an SME or lean Finance environment where you have genuinely been involved in the detail
  • A strong understanding of financial controls and the importance of accurate financial information
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and work to tight deadlines
  • A proactive and solutions-focused approach
  • Excellent attention to detail and a real pride in getting things right
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to support the wider team
  • The confidence to question, investigate and improve rather than simply process

AAT, ACCA or CIMA studies would be beneficial, but practical experience, attitude and the ability to take ownership are just as important.
