Job Introduction

Assistant Manager (Asphalt Plant)

Location: Stancombe Asphalt Plant, Flax Bourton, Bristol

Are you an experienced Asphalt, Quarry, Plant, Production or Site Supervisor/Manager looking for your next challenge? Do you want real autonomy and responsibility? Do you thrive on driving performance and taking ownership of site operations, plant performance as well as safety and continuous improvement? Would you like the chance to play a key role in delivering high-quality materials to major infrastructure projects?

We're looking for a passionate and commercially minded Section Manager / Assistant Manager to help lead the safe, efficient and profitable operation of our Stancombe Asphalt Plant near Bristol. This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Supervisor or Manager ready for the next step.

What You’ll Be Doing

As Section Manager / Assistant Manager, you'll oversee the day-to-day operation of the asphalt plant, ensuring production targets, safety standards, environmental compliance and customer expectations are achieved.

You'll be responsible for leading a team, managing performance and budgets, and making sure our customers receive the high-quality products and service they expect. This will include:

  • Managing, coaching and developing a high-performing operational team
  • Leading health, safety and environmental standards across the site
  • Overseeing plant production and operational performance
  • Managing planned preventative maintenance of fixed and mobile plant
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives and operational efficiencies
  • Managing budgets, costs and financial performance
  • Maintaining stock control processes and operational reporting
  • Implementing and reviewing SOPs, risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Conducting safety briefings, toolbox talks and investigations where required
  • Managing contractor controls, inductions and site compliance
  • Monitoring site KPIs and driving performance improvements
  • Supporting the ongoing development and training of site personnel
  • Ensuring compliance with Quarry Regulations and industry standards

This is predominantly a Monday to Friday role however flexibility is required to support operational and customer requirements when needed.

What We're Looking For

Suitable candidates will have experience managing plant operations and leading teams within an asphalt, quarrying, aggregates, concrete or similar heavy industrial environment. You will also have:

  • Proven leadership and people management skills
  • Strong health, safety and environmental mindset with experience of developing safe working procedures and risk assessments
  • Experience driving operational performance and continuous improvement
  • Budget management and cost control experience
  • Knowledge of production processes and operational compliance
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Good IT skills, including SAP and Microsoft Office
  • Diploma in Quarry Technology or FdSc Extractives Technology (preferred)
  • SHE NVQ Level 4 / QCF Level 6 (advantageous)
  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualification (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of raw material extraction, processing and production techniques

A full UK driving licence is essential as a company vehicle is provided.

Location: this role is based at our Tarmac Stancombe Asphalt Plant, Flax Bourton near Bristol which is easily accessible from Weston-super-Mare, Bristol, Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, South Gloucester and the surrounding areas.
