Job Description

This position fulfils a number of newsgathering roles across the Channel 5 news and planning desks. You will assist our News Editors and planning team across TV and digital output to chase and secure content and guests and assign resources. The successful candidate will be proactive in finding story elements, understand the 5 News agenda and have the energy and enthusiasm to deliver distinctive programmes. You must also appreciate the importance of social media and work with our correspondents in promoting our content online.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting News Editors, Planning Editor and Planning Deputy News Editor as and when required
  • Answering news desk phones, dealing with callers and prioritising information
  • Pursuing, booking and liaising with any potential guests or contributors, negotiating fees within budget
  • Passing on information in a clear, concise manner
  • Co-ordinating the assignment and briefing of newsgathering staff
  • Being a key liaison point between the news desk and on-the-road teams
  • Dealing with PRs and publicity to secure high profile guests
  • Logging picture as and when required
  • Being aware of copyright and access information as well as ITN compliance rules
  • Researching, locating, and negotiating the acquisition of stills and video material within budget
  • Sourcing and securing video and other content from social media for TV and digital output
  • Fielding queries and facilitating special commissions
  • Finding and researching stories and securing filming opportunities
  • Ensuring liaison with the ITV News and Channel 4 News news desks and ITN Productions to ensure 5 News is across all content and deployments and to avoid duplications in assignments
  • Identifying and creating opportunities for digital content then working with the news desk, planning team and Digital Editor to deliver them
  • Understanding the importance of fast, accurate and detailed logging of material and absolute compliance with ITN policy on clip coding
  • Liaising with the rostering team about the availability of newsgathering staff
  • Act up to the role of Deputy News Editor on occasion

  • Interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a broad range of people
  • Engagement with new technologies and newsgathering methods
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making
  • Previous newsroom experience desired
  • Only candidates with a journalistic background or training will be considered for this position
