Assistant News Editor

The Sun Online is the biggest mobile news brand in the UK - and still growing - with a talented, diverse team who publish the best coverage of news, sport, TV and showbiz and lifestyle.

Your role: We are looking for a new Assistant News Editor to help grow our award-winning operation. This is a rare opportunity for the right applicant to join The Sun’s leading digital news desk.

Day to day you will:

  • Assist the Head of Digital News in leading a team of high-performing reporters
  • Manage and run reporters and freelancers in office & on the ground on the big stories of the day
  • Oversee tips, exclusives and original content ideas from start to finish to an excellent standard
  • Work with audience and homepage teams to ensure stories are optimised for every platform
  • Be brimming with agenda-driven ideas, strong exclusives and quirky, original, Sun-style content
  • Contribute to The Sun’s off-diary operation and improve the quality and quantity of our content
  • Help to drive growth through data-led decision-making and be adept at utilising analytics
  • Collaborate closely with our video team to help bring video to the heart of our storytelling
  • Liaise with agencies and freelancers to make sure our coverage stays ahead of the competition
  • Help train and develop our talented young reporters and get the most out of them day-to-day
  • Lead the news operation as and when required, including at nights and weekends when necessary

What we're looking for from you:

  • Experience working at a national newsdesk level
  • Proven experience of running multiple reporters at once and work calmly under pressure
  • Knowledge of and experience in using recognised search tools, analytics and video
  • Experience of leading news operations on occasion and a track record of exclusives
  • Solid contacts with agencies and freelancers around the UK and internationally
  • Must have flair and an ability to spot the hidden potential in stories
  • Be unflappable under pressure and work at a consistently high standard
  • Positive attitude and a good team player
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of the The Sun brand, across digital, print, video and social
  • Flexibility to work shift patterns across 7 days
