Job Description
We invite applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor position in Geoenvironmental Engineering for Low-Carbon, Climate-Resilient Transport Infrastructure Systems, in the Built Environment and Sustainability research cluster within the School of Engineering, University of Warwick. The post is on the Research and Teaching Pathway.
The successful applicant will pursue research that makes fundamental contributions to climate adaptation, environmental monitoring, infrastructure resilience, and digital approaches to understanding environmental risk. This includes the application of Earth Observation, satellite-based monitoring, AI-assisted analysis, and geospatial methods to real-world engineering and environmental challenges. Equally important is the integration of these approaches with fundamental experimental and theoretical geomechanics, including advanced laboratory investigations of soil behaviour under changing climatic conditions, fracture and damage processes in geomaterials, and their representation through computational modelling. This integrated experimental–computational–field framework ensures that macro-scale observations are underpinned by rigorous physical understanding.
It also presents a significant opportunity for Warwick to develop a distinctive interdisciplinary capability linking civil engineering, geoscience, and digital environmental systems thereby strengthening its position in competitive UKRI and Horizon Europe programmes. Furthermore, it enables strong interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, particularly with Computer Science and Material Science, by integrating engineering geoscience with advanced digital technologies such as AI, machine learning, data analytics, and computer vision alongside experimental geomechanics, to support innovative, data-driven approaches to infrastructure and environmental resilience.
This post will contribute to the development of a cohesive research cluster spanning materials development, transport and infrastructure systems, and environmental resilience. This cluster will draw on both experimental and numerical modelling approaches, reinforcing and extending the strengths of existing academic staff. We are especially interested in candidates whose work can leverage or contribute to the School’s collaborative, translational, and industrially engaged research environment.
Candidates will be expected to teach to the highest quality on undergraduate, postgraduate and Degree Apprenticeship programmes offered by the School of Engineering, including teaching in Transport Systems, Geospatial Technologies and Environmental Infrastructure Systems.
About You
We are ideally seeking a candidate with a broad and integrated expertise spanning the full spectrum from fundamental geomechanics to large-scale digital environmental systems. At the micro and meso scales, this includes unsaturated soil mechanics, particle scale behaviour computational modelling to fractures and damages in geomaterials. At the macro scale, this would include geoscience, remote sensing, satellite imaging, GIS, geospatial modelling, AI-enabled environmental analysis, covering infrastructure-related ground systems across all levels of observation and analysis. This would complement and extend Warwick Engineering’s developing strengths in ground engineering, geoenvironmental systems, and computational modelling, while broadening our capabilities into emerging digital and environmental monitoring technologies.

You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline. For an Assistant Professor appointment, you must be able to demonstrate the capability to establish an independent research activity, which has the ambition and potential to become internationally leading. If appointed as an Assistant Professor, you will be appointed for a probationary period (usually five years) during which you will be given a reduced teaching and administration load to enable you to establish your research group. Successful completion of probation will coincide with promotion to a permanent Associate Professor position.
For an Associate Professor appointment, you will have already established a high-quality independent research activity and have been awarded substantial research funding from external sources, while having experience in successful delivery of teaching activities.
At either level, you will initiate, develop and deliver high quality research, publish top-tier journal papers and demonstrate the potential for impact from your research. You will also engage with higher education pedagogy and be willing to develop novel teaching methods, embracing changes in teaching technology and expectations. CEng (or equivalent professional status) is desirable, with the expectation that the successful candidate will be working towards chartership within a defined timeframe (typically 2–3 years).

About The Department
The School of Engineering is a multidisciplinary department that aspires to conduct research to internationally leading standards. The School has recently established Research Clusters, launched in the Summer of 2025. This post aligns to the Built Environment and Sustainability cluster (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/engresearch/builtenvironmentandsustainability/), which has strong expertise across the fundamental engineering systems that underpin resilient and sustainable infrastructure, and focuses on a broad range of issues underpinning the construction and environmental sectors at both national and international levels. Combining computational modelling with practical experimentation, we tackle issues directly associated with the many challenges posed by the Climate Emergency and linked to UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Our research has strong sub-group activities in the fields of Ground Engineering and Structural Engineering. Geotechnical and geoenvironmental research addresses soil behaviour, soil–structure interaction, foundation engineering, and sustainable ground improvement. Research in construction materials encompasses timber engineering, masonry, and innovative low-carbon materials for sustainable construction. These strengths are supported by expertise in computational modelling and digital engineering, enabling the analysis and simulation of complex engineering systems. Additional strengths include structural dynamics, vibration control, earthquake engineering, condition monitoring, infrastructure reliability, and risk assessment, alongside data-driven approaches integrating sensing, machine learning, and optimisation to enhance the performance, durability, and resilience of built infrastructure systems. The Cluster is open to broadening its activities towards geoscience, remote sensing, satellite imaging, GIS, geospatial modelling, AI-enabled environmental analysis, and infrastructure-related ground systems.
The School of Engineering leads various undergraduate and taught Masters courses and has > 1,600 students on taught courses with an annual Year 1 undergraduate intake of c. 480 students. Students on our undergraduate programmes follow a common programme of study in Year 1. After this, most students choose to join specialised courses. The Built Environment and Sustainability Cluster is primarily involved in the delivery of the Civil Engineering related UG and PG programmes, including the BEng Degree Apprenticeship in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering and MSc Humanitarian Engineering (https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/degree_apprenticeships/civil_and_infrastructure_engineering/).
