Job Title: Assistant Payroll Manager

Location: Aberdeen/Glasgow
Salary: Up to £40,000 + Excellent Benefits
Working Pattern: 2/3 days office, the rest from home
Type: Permanent & Full Time

We are recruiting for an Assistant Payroll Manager to join a leading professional services organisation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong technical payroll knowledge, leadership experience, and a passion for delivering an exceptional service to clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support the day-to-day operations of the payroll team, ensuring all deadlines and service standards are met.
  • Process and oversee a portfolio of payrolls, including more complex client requirements.
  • Delegate and review work, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and ongoing support to team members.
  • Act as a technical point of escalation for complex payroll queries and challenges.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and ensure changes are reflected in processes and procedures.
  • Identify, develop, and deliver technical and procedural training for the team.
  • Support and lead payroll-related projects and specialist technical initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate client process documentation and ensure high standards of process governance.
  • Work closely with payroll software providers to resolve system issues and support process improvements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.

About You:

  • Previous experience in a senior payroll or leadership position.
  • Experience working in a bureau and knowledge of STAR (Essential).
  • Strong end-to-end UK payroll knowledge and experience managing complex payroll requirements.
  • Experience leading and supporting a payroll team.
  • Excellent knowledge of payroll legislation and a commitment to keeping up to date with technical changes.
  • Strong client relationship and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working across multiple payrolls and managing competing deadlines.
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to manage client expectations effectively.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
