An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Adult Mental Health Social Care service to be part of the recently developed Centralised Duty Team for Mental Health. You will be joining the Central Duty Team which currently covers North Norfolk, South Norfolk and Norwich localities.
You will be part of a small and developing team of practitioners who respond to referrals received into the mental health team and you will be required to adopt a strength-based approach as outlined in the Care Act 2014. You will be required to have good risk assessment skills and be able to work under pressure.
- You will be required to work collaboratively with colleagues in a fast-paced environment, liaising with professionals both within Norfolk County Council and from external agencies.
- Whilst much of the work will be over the telephone, there are occasions where face-to-face assessments and interventions are required, so you will need to be able to drive and have access to transport.
We are proud of our multi-disciplinary working environment and positive working relationships with our Health colleagues. Our team values good listening skills, flexibility, adaptability to new ways of working and a commitment to supporting people to maintain their independence. Workers in our team are open to change, innovative and confident, with a focus on strengthening social care across Norfolk. We build strong partnerships with service users and their families, are ambitious about what people can achieve and explore ideas for positive outcomes that are fit for purpose and best value for money.
Our team is experienced in working with complex cases, has a sound knowledge of the Care Act (2014), Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Safeguarding, as well as excellent time management and IT skills. Any new staff are supported to develop a thorough working knowledge of Norfolk County Council processes and procedures. We are investing in people who can take us forward on our journey to embed our vision.
As an Assistant Practitioner within this team, you will undertake assessments, service commissioning and reassessment work. The role involves working on duty and completing casework, depending on the needs of the service. These will be carried out via video/telephone and/or face to face. You will have excellent communication, record-keeping and keyboard skills, along with experience of working with vulnerable people. In addition, you should have a commitment to excellent customer service and be familiar with the Departments' eligibility criteria.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
