I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience of designing, delivering, assessing, and evaluating high quality teaching and learning practice (not necessarily in a University setting but otherwise demonstrating ability to manage learning environments in other contexts) as well as evidence of your contributions to the development of contemporary practice are essential.
We recognise that candidates may have gained relevant teaching, training and assessment experience through a range of professional settings. Experience might include, for example, training pupils or junior tenants in advocacy or case preparation, delivering CPD or qualifying sessions for your Inn or Circuit, acting as an assessor or supervisor on a Bar Course or pupillage scheme, or developing innovative approaches to skills training that have subsequently been adopted more widely within chambers or your Inn. If you do not currently hold a teaching qualification, such as HEA Fellowship, you will have the opportunity to work towards this during your probationary period.
