About the job.
National Highways has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to join the Integration & Enablement (I&E) team within Major Projects on the A66 programme. The I&E team works across the programme to improve alignment, coordination, and future readiness in areas including communications and stakeholder engagement, lands, utilities, traffic management, operational collaboration, and futureproofing.
As an Assistant Project Manager, you will support Project Managers and workstream leads in turning agreed strategies and priorities into clear, practical plans. You will coordinate information across work packages and specialist functions, maintain visibility of milestones, dependencies, risks, and decisions, and support governance, performance reporting, handover, and continuous improvement.
Please note this position can be based from either our Manchester or Leeds offices; however, travel to the A66 will be required.
- Support the development, implementation, and review of I&E strategies, workstream plans, and delivery arrangements, ensuring agreed actions are practical, clearly owned, and aligned with programme priorities.
- Develop and maintain proportionate project and programme management products, including integrated plans, milestone and look-ahead schedules, action trackers, risk and issue records, decision logs, governance products, and handover packs.
- Coordinate inputs from work package teams, specialist functions, stakeholders, delivery partners, and the supply chain to identify key milestones, interfaces, dependencies, constraints, commitments, and decisions required to support effective delivery.
- Support the preparation of reports and briefing information, maintaining actions and commitments, tracking project readiness and progress, and highlighting matters requiring intervention or escalation.
- Analyse project and workstream information to identify emerging risks, gaps, inconsistencies, and potential impacts on future activities, and support the development and monitoring of mitigation or recovery actions.
- Support the Project Manager in day-to-day project activities, including commercial and contract administration, health and safety, risk, quality, and assurance.

About you.
- Suitable project management qualification or equivalent relevant experience, ideally with membership of, or a commitment to work towards membership of, an appropriate professional body (i.e. APM).
- Experience of supporting project or programme delivery in a complex, multi-disciplinary, or matrix environment.
- Good understanding of health and safety, quality, and governance requirements within project delivery.
- Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to coordinate several activities, maintain accurate records, and manage competing priorities.
- Strong collaboration, stakeholder, communication, and presentation skills, with the confidence to bring together contributions from a wide range of teams and disciplines.
- Good analytical and constructive challenge skills, with the ability to interpret project information, identify gaps or inconsistencies, provide clear commentary, and escalate concerns through agreed governance routes is desirable.

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
