Role Description
The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of rail and infrastructure projects by assisting Project Managers with planning, coordination, administration, and stakeholder communication throughout the project lifecycle.
The APM will demonstrate professionalism at all times whilst working collaboratively with colleagues and clients. Show initiative while recognising when to seek guidance and commit to continuous learning and professional development.
The role provides an opportunity to develop project management skills while contributing to the safe, timely, and cost-effective delivery of projects. The post holder will gradually assume greater responsibility as their competence and experience develop.

Key Responsibilities
- Support Project Managers in delivering projects safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Assist in the coordination of project activities across design, procurement, and construction phases.
- Help prepare project programmes, reports, meeting minutes, and action trackers.
- Monitor project progress and highlight potential issues or risks to the Project Manager.
- Assist with project documentation and maintain accurate project records.
Client & Stakeholder Support
- Support communication with clients, contractors, designers, and other stakeholders.
- Attend project meetings and assist with recording actions and decisions.
- Build positive working relationships with clients and project partners.
Project Controls
- Assist with monitoring project budgets and programme performance.
- Support change control processes.
- Assist with preparing progress reports and financial information.
- Help coordinate project deliverables and document submissions.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Promote a positive health, safety, and environmental culture.
- Support compliance with company procedures, industry standards, and statutory requirements.
- Assist with reviewing project documentation and ensuring records are maintained.
- Participate in site visits and inspections where appropriate.
Risk Management
- Assist in identifying project risks and opportunities.
- Maintain project risk and issue registers.
- Escalate concerns promptly to the Project Manager.

Business Support
- Assist with bid preparation and tender submissions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the role.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience working within a project environment.
- Experience within the rail, construction, or infrastructure sector.
- Experience supporting project delivery or project administration.
- Good organisational and planning skills.
- Experience working collaboratively within teams.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Basic understanding of project management processes.
- Understanding of health and safety responsibilities.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise competing tasks.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Good attention to detail.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience of client-facing environments.
- Knowledge of project management principles.
- CDM Regulations.
- NEC Contracts.
- Network Rail standards.
- Project governance.
Education
Essential
- A Levels, BTEC, NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) or relevant industry experience.
Desirable
- HNC/HND or Degree in:
- Civil Engineering
- Construction Management
- Project Management
- Quantity Surveying
- Railway Engineering
- or another relevant discipline.
