Role overview
Knights Brown is an independent civil engineering contractor delivering complex work across energy, water utilities, infrastructure, coasts & ports, and buildings.
We are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our Energy team, supporting the commercial management of civil engineering projects within the East Anglia region.
This role will support the Quantity Surveyor and Commercial Manager on wind, solar, battery energy storage (BESS) and National Grid projects, delivered under NEC and FIDIC contracts, including works undertaken as a subcontractor. You will gain hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle, with support towards professional qualification.
What you’ll be doing
- Supporting the preparation of monthly applications for payment and client valuations
- Measuring completed works and maintaining accurate quantity and site records
- Assisting with the administration of NEC and FIDIC contracts, including early warnings, compensation events, variations and notices
- Preparing subcontract and supplier enquiries, tender comparisons and orders
- Assessing subcontractor applications for payment and maintaining subcontract accounts
- Assisting with monthly cost value reconciliations (CVRs), cost reporting and forecasting
- Working closely with project and site teams to capture change and protect entitlement
- Supporting the preparation and agreement of client and subcontract final accounts

What we’re looking for
- Degree, HNC or HND in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline (or working towards)
- Some experience in a commercial role within civil engineering or construction – early-career applicants welcome
- Understanding of measurement and valuation principles
- Strong numerical, analytical and organisational skills with good attention to detail
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Full UK driving licence

Desirable:
- Exposure to NEC3/NEC4 or FIDIC forms of contract
- Experience on energy, renewables or utilities projects (wind, solar, BESS, grid or substation works)
- Familiarity with CESMM4
- Working towards RICS or ICES membership

Location & travel
- Based at our Norwich office
- Travel to project sites across East Anglia as required, with occasional travel further afield dependent on project location
