Balfour Beatty is looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our growing commercial team supporting the ASTI programme across the North East of Scotland.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring or developing Quantity Surveyor to build their career on one of Scotland’s most significant infrastructure programmes.

The ASTI programme forms a key part of the investment being made in Scotland’s electricity transmission network, delivering the infrastructure required to support increased renewable energy generation and the transition towards a lower-carbon energy system.

Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors, Senior Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers, you will gain hands-on exposure to the commercial delivery of major infrastructure projects while developing your technical and professional capability.

What you'll be doing

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team in ensuring projects are delivered successfully, commercially and in accordance with Balfour Beatty procedures.

Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Supporting the Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor and wider commercial team with the day-to-day commercial management of the project.
  • Assisting with the preparation of monthly project cost and commercial reports.
  • Supporting the preparation and submission of applications for payment and project invoicing.
  • Helping monitor project costs, budgets and cash flow forecasts.
  • Assisting with subcontractor procurement, administration, payments and certification.
  • Raising purchase order requisitions and supporting the accurate recording of project costs.
  • Supporting the identification, recording and management of project change.
  • Collating supporting information and substantiation for variations and additional costs.
  • Assisting with project correspondence and ensuring potential commercial or contractual issues are highlighted to the wider project team.
  • Supporting the commercial team in identifying potential overspends, risks and opportunities.
  • Liaising with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and members of the wider project team.
  • Assisting with the preparation and close-out of final accounts.
  • Helping ensure the project team understands relevant contractual requirements.
  • Supporting commercial and financial audits when required.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who is keen to develop a long-term career within Quantity Surveying and commercial management.

You'll Ideally Have:

  • Some experience within a commercial, construction, civil engineering or financial environment.
  • A degree, HNC/HND or similar qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline, or be working towards one.
  • An understanding of basic construction commercial principles.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good attention to detail and organisation.
  • Confident communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • A positive and proactive approach to solving problems.
  • The ability to manage priorities and work accurately in a busy project environment.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
