The Opportunity

Hill McGlynn are currently working with an established and growing residential construction business who are looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team, based from their offices in Kings Hill, Kent.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor looking to develop their commercial career within the residential sector. Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and senior commercial professionals, you will support the delivery of residential developments while continuing to build your technical and commercial knowledge.

The position offers exposure across the full project lifecycle, including procurement, cost management, subcontractor accounts, valuations, variations and final accounts, with excellent opportunities for further progression.

The Role

As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of residential developments, working closely with the wider commercial and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Assisting with the day-to-day commercial management of residential projects.
  • Supporting the procurement and appointment of subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Preparing and issuing tender enquiries and analysing subcontractor quotations.
  • Assisting with subcontractor valuations, payments and account management.
  • Monitoring project costs against agreed budgets and forecasts.
  • Supporting the preparation of monthly valuations and cost reports.
  • Identifying, recording and assisting with the management of variations.
  • Maintaining accurate commercial records and project documentation.
  • Assisting with the preparation and agreement of subcontractor final accounts.
  • Supporting Quantity Surveyors with forecasting, reporting and commercial risk management.
  • Working closely with site, technical, buying and commercial teams.
  • Developing strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensuring commercial procedures and processes are followed throughout the project lifecycle.

About You

We are looking for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor who is keen to continue developing their career within residential construction.

You Will Ideally Have

  • Previous experience within an Assistant Quantity Surveyor role.
  • Experience within residential construction, housebuilding or a related construction environment.
  • A degree, HNC/HND or relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline.
  • A good understanding of construction costs, procurement and subcontractor management.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good commercial awareness and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider project and commercial team.
  • A proactive approach with the ambition to take on greater commercial responsibility as you develop.
