Assistant Quantity Surveyor Chesterfield

Chesterfield, Derbyshire | £30,000-£45,000 | Hybrid working | Bonus | Private healthcare | Flexible hours

An established chartered construction consultancy is looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join its contractor-side commercial division in Chesterfield. The team operates as a main contractors commercial function, providing full Quantity Surveying services to major contractors across the UK.

The work covers government refurbishment and building fabric projects, including MOJ, MOD, government offices, defence estates and wider public-sector buildings. Typical project values range from £500,000 to £5 million, with some schemes reaching £20 million.

The division is part of a financially secure international consultancy with long-term contractor relationships. The Chesterfield office has around 50 staff, including 40 Quantity Surveyors, giving an Assistant Quantity Surveyor plenty of day-to-day support, exposure to experienced colleagues and a clear route to progress.

The Assistant Quantity Surveyor role

Based in Chesterfield with regular site visits, you will support the commercial delivery of government refurbishment and building fabric schemes across the region.

Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors, you will gain exposure to live projects from pre-construction through to final account, with support to develop your commercial knowledge and take on more responsibility.

  • Assist with project costs and commercial performance
  • Help prepare valuations and assess variations
  • Support cost reporting and commercial updates
  • Assist with procurement and subcontractor packages
  • Monitor budgets and costs with guidance from senior colleagues
  • Work closely with project teams, Quantity Surveyors and contractor clients
  • Attend sites and client meetings as required

The position offers a varied workload, structured support, hybrid working and a clear route to progress to Quantity Surveyor level.

Some government and defence projects may require security clearance. This will be arranged during onboarding.

About you

  • Some experience in an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor or commercial construction role
  • Exposure to a main contractor, contractor-side or refurbishment environment would be useful
  • A basic understanding of valuations, variations, cost reporting or procurement
  • Construction-related degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification preferred
  • Willing to learn from experienced Quantity Surveyors and work towards chartered status
  • Comfortable visiting sites and managing priorities across several projects
