Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Location: Farnborough, Surrey
Salary: £40,000 – £48,000 + Package
Job Type: Full-time
Sector: Design & Build Residential Housing
Reporting to: Commercial Director
The Opportunity
We are looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team, based in Farnborough, Surrey.
This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially minded individual looking to develop their career within the Design & Build Residential Housing sector, working on high-quality residential developments from pre-construction through to completion. We are particularly interested in candidates who have gained experience within design & build residential housing, either with a main contractor/housebuilder or a specialist interiors subcontractor, ideally covering areas such as carpentry & joinery, drywall/drylining or decoration.
Reporting directly to the Commercial Director, you will work closely with the wider commercial and project teams, supporting the financial and contractual management of projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the commercial management of residential construction projects from procurement through to final account.
- Support the preparation and management of project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.
- Assist with the preparation, review, and agreement of subcontractor packages and orders.
- Obtain and analyse subcontractor and supplier quotations.
- Assist with procurement and subcontractor negotiations.
- Measure and value works completed on site.
- Prepare and assess interim valuations and payment applications.
- Assist with the management and valuation of variations and change.
- Monitor project costs, commitments, and expenditure.
- Support the preparation of monthly commercial reports.
- Assist with the preparation and agreement of final accounts.
- Maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation.
- Work closely with site managers, project managers, designers, subcontractors, and clients.
- Identify potential commercial risks and opportunities and escalate them appropriately to the Commercial Director.
- Assist with contractual correspondence and general commercial administration.

About You
We are looking for someone who is commercially aware, organised, and ambitious, with a genuine interest in developing their career within residential construction. Ideally, you will have:
- Previous experience in an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Trainee Quantity Surveyor, or similar commercial role.
- Experience within Design & Build Residential Housing, preferably with a main contractor or housebuilder; or
- Experience working for a specialist interiors subcontractor, particularly within:
- Carpentry & joinery
- Drywall / drylining
- Plasterboard / partitions
- Decoration / finishing
- Other specialist internal packages
- A good understanding of construction processes and commercial principles.
- Experience with subcontractor procurement, valuations, and variations would be advantageous.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Confident communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues and supply chain partners.
- A proactive approach with the ability to work independently and take responsibility.
- A relevant degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent construction/commercial qualification would be advantageous, although relevant industry experience will also be considered.
