Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Location: Bristol
Sector: Main Contracting
Salary: Up to £50,000, dependent on experience + package
The Opportunity
Walker & Sloan is recruiting an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established regional main contractor in Bristol.
You’ll work on a varied portfolio of construction projects, supporting the commercial team while developing your ability to manage packages and take on greater responsibility. This opportunity could also suit you if you’re moving towards Quantity Surveyor level and want a role that reflects your existing experience.
Role Overview
You’ll support the commercial management of projects from procurement through to final account, working closely with site teams, subcontractors and senior commercial colleagues.
- Preparing subcontract enquiries
- Comparing quotations and assisting with subcontract orders
- Reviewing applications for payment
- Valuing completed work
- Assisting in ensuring variations are identified, recorded and assessed

You’ll contribute to cost reporting and forecasting, keeping commercial records accurate and highlighting potential risks. Regular contact with project teams will help you understand progress on site and the financial implications of changes to the works.
As your experience develops, you’ll take greater ownership of subcontract packages and project commercial activities.
About You
- Experience as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor or an early-career Quantity Surveyor within a building contractor
- Experience with new build, refurbishment or fit out projects would be relevant
- A grounding in procurement, valuations and variations, alongside a willingness to develop your commercial knowledge
- Comfortable working with figures, reviewing drawings and communicating with site teams and subcontractors
- A qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline, either completed or in progress, would be beneficial
- Attention to detail, practical approach and readiness to take responsibility
