Assistant Syndicate Accountant

We are working with a leading organisation within the Lloyd’s and London Market insurance sector to recruit an Assistant Syndicate Accountant.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Ledgers

  • Maintain accurate and complete financial ledgers, including year-of-account roll-forwards, new year set-up and class-of-business configuration.
  • Support the year-end close process and ensure delivery in line with agreed timetables.
  • Prepare and post distribution journals relating to the closure of underwriting years.

Lloyd’s Central Accounting and Reconciliations

  • Prepare and post monthly accounting journals within the month-end timetable.
  • Complete monthly reconciliations, ensuring all differences are investigated, evidenced, assigned and resolved promptly.
  • Work closely with Operations and other stakeholders to identify variances, agree ownership and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items.

Management and Regulatory Reporting

  • Deliver accurate and complete ledger entries, including journals to trial balance.
  • Ensure accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, fees, bank transactions and tax entries are accurately recorded and appropriately supported.
  • Prepare accurate and timely regulatory submissions to Lloyd’s, maintaining a clear audit trail and appropriate review evidence.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support the timely resolution of audit requests, issues and reporting deliverables.

Expense and VAT Management

  • Support and oversee periodic group recharges, ensuring costs are complete, accurate and appropriately evidenced.
  • Calculate and substantiate accruals and prepayments.
  • Produce expense-to-plan analysis, explaining material variances and supporting management decision-making.
  • Prepare accurate and timely VAT returns and work closely with the relevant tax team to resolve queries.

Investment Accounting

  • Complete investment reconciliations and investigate and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Operate key portfolio controls, including issuer concentration and credit rating checks, escalating any exceptions where appropriate.
  • Ensure investment-related ledger entries are processed accurately and within reporting deadlines.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience within the Lloyd’s or London Market insurance sector.
  • Strong experience in financial reconciliations and reporting.
  • Experience of working with external auditors and third-party service providers.
  • Progress towards an accountancy qualification would be advantageous.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • A collaborative approach and the confidence to work with stakeholders across Finance, Operations and other business areas.
