Assistant Technical Officer (ATO) - Specimen Reception

Our busy, fully computerised Pathology Laboratory at Peterborough City Hospital requires staff members to join our team that supports analytical and diagnostic procedures performed in the Pathology Laboratories.

About the Role

Specimen Reception is a fast-paced, high output environment covering a 24 hour period. The role involves receiving, sorting, labelling and preparing specimens; data entry, and dealing with telephone enquiries. We are looking for individuals with good data entry skills, attention to detail, and ability to focus.

The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and, after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required, including weekends and bank holidays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the accurate receipt and identification of pathology specimens and request forms for Blood Sciences.
  • Maintaining the integrity of the matching process between samples and forms.
  • Preparing samples for processing by labelling, storing, and retrieving them in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performing administrative and clerical tasks, including data entry of patient information and test requests, handling general telephone inquiries, and verifying data accuracy.
  • Communicating effectively with clinical staff about laboratory test requests and results.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
