Job Title
Starting Salary: £38,090 per annum
Working Hours: 36 hours per week
About the Role
We are recruiting an Assistant Traffic Systems Engineer to join our busy Traffic Systems Maintenance Team. This role ensures traffic lights and related technology are maintained and operating to a high standard.
Location: Based in Leatherhead with countywide responsibilities. Occasional travel across Surrey required.
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (2 days in office, 3 days remote, subject to change).

About the Team
The Traffic Operations team of Surrey County Council ensures traffic flow is managed. They deliver reliable and efficient low-carbon journeys through effective maintenance, innovative design, and technology. They use smart data to manage congestion and mitigate the impact of events and incidents on Surrey roads.

About the Role
As an Assistant Traffic Engineer, you will:
- Support the operation and maintenance of Surrey’s Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS)
- Help ensure effective management of the highway network and reduction of congestion
- Work with experienced colleagues and demonstrate the Surrey Way behaviours: Ambitious, Inclusive, Collaborative, and Dynamic
- Collaborate with a maintenance team consisting of one Senior Engineer and two Technical Assistants
- Respond to damage to county assets, assist with traffic management during repair works, and ensure activities are carried out safely and efficiently
- Support site chart amendments using AutoCAD and other relevant software
- Analyse asset data and maintain accurate records
- Assist with financial processes by checking bills and invoices for accuracy
- Respond to enquiries from members of the public, councillors, and other stakeholders

Shortlisting Criteria
To be considered for shortlisting, your application should demonstrate:
- Understanding of current intelligent traffic systems (ITS), including control methodologies, controller specifications, and associated software applications
- Basic understanding of design, operation, and maintenance of traffic control systems
- Understanding of CAD and associated traffic signal applications such as AutoCAD
- Understanding of finance, including checking bills and invoices for accuracy
- Ability to communicate professionally with contractors/consultants and stakeholders
- Relevant Level 4 qualification (e.g., HNC/CertHE) or relevant experience
