Company Description
Medical & Commercial International (MCI) is a specialised firm founded on the underwriting of international liability risks. Starting in 2025, the business began an expansion into ‘short tail’ lines of business including Marine, Specie and WTPV. With a team of highly experienced professionals, MCI has built expertise spanning the global insurance market. The company collaborates with a diverse range of clients, from start-ups to large corporate and public entities. MCI is dedicated to providing tailored solutions to address the complex needs of its clients worldwide.
The Role
This is a full-time position for an Assistant Underwriter within the Cargo team but working closely alongside the Logistics & Transportation and other Marine classes.
The role is based in the City of London, with flexibility to work from home on designated days. As an Assistant Underwriter, you will provide day-to-day support to the underwriting team by reviewing submissions, gathering and analysing information, preparing documentation, and assisting with the underwriting of (re)insurance risks across relevant lines of business. You will work closely with underwriters, brokers and internal stakeholders to help ensure risks are assessed accurately, records are maintained, and underwriting processes are completed efficiently and in line with company standards, collaborating to optimise output and service levels.
Job Specification
- Review insurance applications and submissions to check completeness, accuracy and suitability for underwriting consideration
- Gather and analyse relevant information, including client profile, exposure, coverage requirements, claims history, market conditions and other risk factors, to support underwriting assessment
- Assist underwriters with preparing quotes, referrals, renewal reviews and supporting documentation in line with company guidelines and delegated authority processes
- Liaise with the exposure management team to ensure risk aggregation is accurately monitored and natural catastrophe exposures are captured and modelled
- Support the preparation of policy terms, conditions, coverage limits and premiums, ensuring information is accurate and ready for review
- Hold and exercise underwriting authority in accordance with agreed limits, company guidelines and delegated authority procedures
- Liaise with brokers and internal teams to request additional information, respond to routine queries and support the smooth progression of new business and renewal activity
- Maintain accurate records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, internal procedures and underwriting standards

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
