Wholesale Portfolio Management (WPM) Associate

Wholesale Portfolio Management (WPM) is part of Structured Finance within HSBC UK Bank Plc Commercial Bank, which is a combination of specialist teams who work collaboratively and are dedicated to support CMB Coverage (frontline relationship manager teams). WPM has oversight across MME, Leverage Finance, Large Corporate and Corporate Real Estate segments of CMB for debt (asset) pricing, new deal origination (through balance sheet allocation), risk and returns related to both new transactions and the extant portfolio. WPM reviewed at Deal Prioritisation Committee (DPC) >$25bn of facilities in 2025 and is ultimately responsible for maximising the financial return on assets deployed by CMB alongside implementation of capital Optimisation Strategies.
Role Overview
We are currently seeking a diligent and proactive person to join the team as an Associate, primarily on Allocation activities. The role will also include Optimisation activities from time to time, according to business need.
Team Structure
- Capital Allocation / Deal Origination: Supports the coverage teams on the largest, high-profile transactions across CMB and leads the evolution of the CMB portfolio strategy. Maximising returns on a transaction-by-transaction basis and optimising capital deployed through the Deal Prioritisation (DPC) process, working with sector to support Industry Appetite frameworks and shape balance sheet growth through Differentiated Hurdles. Development of initiatives to drive growth or improve oversight and provision of insight to aid OpCo decision making.
- Optimisation: Oversight and accountability of optimising assets deployed, delivered via monitoring of the performance of the extant CMB book and returns for new deals. Reviewing and reporting on RWA returns to OpCo / segment heads on portfolio performance. Pricing framework recommendations allied to regulatory capital changes alongside reporting on wider portfolio dynamics, including RWA saves and low returning clients, as well as asset positions.

Responsibilities
- Provide robust challenge and scrutiny for CMB’s largest and most complex transactions to ensure that we maximise the opportunity to HSBC and deliver profitable growth in relation to the allocation of capital to UK CMB’s most material transactions, support the Deal Prioritisation (DPC) process by assessing transaction economics, balance sheet impact and return metrics (including RoRWA), ensuring pricing/structure are appropriate relative to risk and capital consumption
- Monitor and analyse new approvals to highlight trends, pricing discipline, and any deviations from established guidelines
- Ensure CMB thinks holistically regarding balance sheet management to (i) deliver competitive advantage; and (ii) ensure coverage teams focus time and resources on driving growth in sectors which deliver the best returns
- Contribute the evolution of the portfolio via the use of differentiated return on RWA hurdles and adoption of early regulatory changes therefore targeting the right clients, transactions, products and structures
- Work with internal teams to support the implementation of strategies to improve overall portfolio returns.
Requirements
- Commercial Banking client facing experience is essential, ideally in Leverage, Large Corporate, Mid Market Enterprise or Real Estate Finance
- Excellent attention to detail, so that you can assess data and articulate solutions to senior stakeholders
- Comfortable in analysing and interpreting disparate information, presenting conclusions, and have a solid foundation in Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to build positive working relationships quickly with key stakeholders and the ability to challenge and display high levels of assertiveness
- Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects, prioritise effectively and deliver under time pressure
- Tenacity to drive improvements or efficiencies in bank systems and processes by working with global technology, finance, and data colleagues
- Experience of credit and operational risk management (advantageous)
- Ideally have an all-round knowledge of the bank and a desire to develop and utilise an extensive internal network
- Good knowledge of risk and reporting systems (DCP/CARM, BMM, PVD,OMNIA), as well as ORC and CRM (CME) platforms

Location
This is a hybrid role that can be based at our Canary Wharf or Queen Victoria Street, London offices. There is an expectation of occasional travel for team meetings and collaboration.

Relocation
London office relocation: Between January and April 2027, many office-based HSBC employees in London will move from either 8 Canada Square or Queen Victoria Street to one of our new sites at St. Paul’s or Canary Wharf. Depending on when they join, successful candidates may start at an existing office before moving or join directly at a new location.
