Associate Director – JWG Survey & Engineering

About Us
JWG Survey & Engineering works on rail and highways projects across the UK, specialising in surveying, engineering, monitoring and site engineering. We support clients throughout the project lifecycle, from early survey work through to construction and completion.
JWG is now part of the Survey Solutions Group – the UK's largest engineering surveyors, specialising in land, measured building and underground utility surveys, as well as monitoring and site engineering schemes. With a network of twelve offices across the UK, we have over 160 surveyors and engineers working on some of the UK's major construction and infrastructure developments.
The Role
The Associate Director will oversee operations and drive strategic growth within a key division of the business. With responsibility for annual revenue performance, this is a critical role in delivering high-quality services to clients across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, utilities, environmental services and government, with work delivery undertaken primarily within the rail environment.
You will lead a multidisciplinary team of rail, infrastructure, engineering and monitoring professionals. Your remit will include business development, project delivery oversight, financial performance, client relationship management and team leadership.
The successful candidate will have professional and effective communication skills and will be expected to develop their personal profile within industry and client networks. You will represent the company in a professional manner, ensuring JWG's working practices and company values are consistently promoted.
The role will be predominantly office-based but will also require attendance at operational projects, other office locations, site and management meetings as required. There will be an expectation to work outside contracted hours when required.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Oversee divisional operations to ensure technical excellence, timely delivery and client satisfaction.
- Implement and maintain standardised operational procedures, ensuring consistent measurement and evaluation across all offices.
- Work closely with the Sales and Marketing team on tendering and proposal development.
Commercial & Financial Management
- Manage the departmental P&L, ensuring revenue growth, cost control and profitability targets are met or exceeded.
- Drive increased productivity and utilisation across the business to maximise operational efficiency.
- Report key financial figures and performance metrics to senior leadership, providing insight into people, project and operational risks.
Strategic Development
- Implement the regional growth strategy developed by the Rail Director, aligned with wider company objectives.
- Identify new market opportunities and develop existing client accounts.
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in surveying equipment and software to support ROI-driven technology and asset investment decisions.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, partners and stakeholders.
- Represent the company at client meetings, industry events and professional forums across relevant industry sectors.
- Liaise with clients to understand project requirements and provide accurate quotations and briefings for rail monitoring and rail engineering projects.
Team Leadership & Development
- Recruit, mentor and lead a high-performing departmental team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Guide, develop and inspire teams to deliver exceptional results while maintaining the highest professional standards.
- Promote a positive, collaborative and high-performing working environment.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure departmental compliance with all relevant regulations, licensing requirements and health and safety procedures.

Person Specification
Experience & Knowledge – Essential
- Previous experience working in a management role within the rail sector, with a minimum of three years' experience.
- Minimum of three years' experience implementing operational improvements and best practice.
- Proficient in the use of a range of surveying equipment.
- Strong understanding of P&L management and cost control.
- Knowledge of tendering processes and strong commercial understanding.
Experience & Knowledge – Desirable
- Experience producing track monitoring plans and CRT assessments.
- Experience working as a CRE (Contractors Responsible Engineer) within track or civils.
Skills & Attributes – Essential
- Ability to effectively prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage workload independently and as part of the wider management team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage client expectations.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present to senior leadership on regional performance and strategic opportunities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with sound commercial judgement.
- Ability to identify new market opportunities and expand client accounts.
- Flexibility to respond to changing business needs and market conditions.
- Flexibility to work outside standard hours when required for client meetings or project demands.
- Willingness to undertake regional and occasional national travel.
- Commitment to a long-term role and regional development.
Qualifications & Additional Information
Desirable:
- Relevant undergraduate, master's or postgraduate degree in Surveying or a related discipline.
- Track Handback Engineer training.
Essential:
- Either hold or be working towards professional membership with CICES, PWI or ICE.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Right to work in the UK.
