Associate Director, Cost Management

An excellent Associate Director, Cost Management job opportunity in Birmingham for an experienced cost management professional to lead major infrastructure commissions across rail, highways, energy and water. The role combines project delivery, team leadership, client management and business development within a growing construction consultancy environment.

Project Details

The successful Associate Director will work on major UK infrastructure programmes across sectors including rail, highways, energy and water. Projects include complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure schemes that require high-quality cost management, commercial management, estimating, and project controls services.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Associate Director will take a senior role in the delivery and continued growth of the Cost Management team in Birmingham. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the delivery of cost management services across multiple major infrastructure commissions.
  • Manage and develop Cost Managers and other members of the project team.
  • Provide technical leadership, quality assurance and commercial oversight.
  • Build strong relationships with existing and new clients.
  • Support business development, bids and account management activities.
  • Monitor project cost performance, risks and commercial outcomes.
  • Develop cost management processes, benchmarking and reporting capabilities.
  • Work closely with project controls, engineering and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and support recruitment and team growth.
  • Promote continuous improvement and high standards of client service.

Desired Skills and Experience

Suitable candidates will have significant cost management and quantity surveying experience gained on major infrastructure projects.

  • Strong infrastructure cost management experience within rail, highways, water, energy or similar sectors.
  • Previous experience managing teams and delivering multiple commissions preferred.
  • Strong client management and consultancy experience.
  • Excellent understanding of cost planning, cost control, benchmarking and commercial management.
  • Knowledge of cost and work breakdown structures and recognised methods of measurement.
  • Experience with NEC and other major construction contract forms.
  • Understanding of Earned Value Management and wider project controls principles.
  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to challenge project and engineering teams.
  • Experience contributing to business development and growing client accounts.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction, Finance or another relevant discipline.
  • Professional membership of RICS, ICE, AACE, ACostE or a similar recognised professional body is highly desirable.
